Srinagar: MLC Zaffar Iqbal Manhas has expressed concern over the losses suffered by the fruit growers due to snowfall in Shopian district.
In a statement issued here, he said thousands of apple trees were damaged in Kellar block and upper reaches of the district, putting apple growers into distress.
Other villages that are badly affected include Padpawan, Borihalan, Devpora, Herpora, Dacchana, Saidpora, Amshipora, Jamnagri, Reshnagri etc, he said.
“For most of the population in the district, apple business is the main source of their income. The huge losses due to unexpected snowfall has given a serious blow to the local economy that is already distressed,” he added.
He appealed Governor Sat Pal Malik to intervene and direct administration to take immediate measures for assessing the damage and devise a policy to adequately compensate the growers who have been affected.
