Srinagar: A soldier, who was injured in an encounter with militants at Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Friday, has succumbed to his injuries, officials said.
The soldier, Brejesh Kumar of army’s 22 Rashtriya Rifles, was critically injured in the initial gunfight and was evacuated to army hospital where he succumbed to the injuries, sources said.
The encounter, according to a police officer, ensued after militants fired on a joint team of government forces soon after a cordon-and-search-operation was thrown by them following “credible inputs” about the presence of militants in Pazalpora area of Sopore.
Reportedly two militants have been killed but the police officer did not confirm the details so far.
“The exchange of firing has stopped and the searches are underway to recover the bodies,” the officer said.
Meanwhile authorities have closed all colleges and Higher Secondary Schools in Baramulla, Sopore and Kreeri along with all educational institutions in Rafiabad.
