Bandipora Youth has been selected for US based Fermilab Scientist Visiting Long term Fellowship for his outstanding performance.

Hailing from Papachan area of District Bandipora Dr. Aashaq Shah has been awarded this fellowship to work on the development of the silicon sensors having picoseconds resolution for CERN and to contribute in BSM Higgs Boson Searches.

He will be moving to Fermilab from CERN in the beginning of next year to continue his work on  BSM Higgs boson searches and  on the development of picosecond silicon sensors for CMS experiment at the LHC CERN. Fermilab is the top most laboratory in particle physics where scientists are currently working on Neutrino Physics. While as most of the bosons like Z, W and more recently Higgs were discovered at CERN, on the other hand most of the fermions like top quark etc were discovered at Fermilab.

Shah is working at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland since couple of years and has contributed in the development of Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) for CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider, worlds biggest and complex machine developed by scientists so far.

Additionally, he is working on beyond standard model (BSM) Higgs boson(s) searches. He will be joining as “Guest Scientist” at Fermilab at the beginning of the next year.

Aashaq Raised up in a middle class family, had his primary education in Govt. schools, did his bachelors from Govt. College Bemina, Srinagar and being a student who had all his primary and secondary level education in Govt. schools with lack of exposure and language skills, he would have never dreamt of what he actually is now, working with the world’s greatest minds at the European Centre for Nuclear Physics (CERN), Switzerland and Fermilab, United States.

Earlier he had Qualified all national level exams which include  GATE, CSIR-NET and BARC (first time in 2012 and second time in 2013) to work as a Nuclear Scientist at Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC), Mumbai. Apart from DRP fellowship in medical and radiation physics, he was also offered Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) Fellowship  in 2012 and again in 2013 to pursue PhD at BARC, but he gave up all these options with the only hope that he will one day work on the newly discovered “Higgs boson” at the LHC. He became joyful when he got an opportunity to work at International Centre for theoretical Physics (ICTP), Italy in 2013.

Shah joined University of Delhi in September-2013 for his doctorate and worked initially for the development of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC’s), type of particle detector used to detect muons, for future India Neutrino Observatory (INO) which is going to be build in Tamil Nadu. Being a part of the Research and Development (R&D) team at Delhi University, their efforts were highly praised by many scientist all over India in 2015.

Finally in the beginning of 2015, when his passport was released, he moved to Geneva to work on Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at the LHC. Currently, he is working on the development of Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM)  detector for CMS-Muon  Endcap upgrade project. These GEM detectors will be installed in CMS experiment during LHC shutdown in 2019-2020. Shah is working on beyond Standard Model Higgs boson (BSM Higgs) searches. He has presented his scientific work at several national and international institutions like BARC, TIFR, IISER (India), DESY Germany, CERN Switzerland, INFN, Italy.

Shah is collaborating with many international research centres like Fermilab, USA, Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare (INFN), Italy and Ghent University, Belgium. From past one and half year, he has been a author and co- author of several international research publications
