Srinagar: The students from Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) on Saturday staged a protest against the arrest of their colleague by the police, demanding his immediate release.

Scores of B. Sc and PG Nursing Students of SKIMS assembled here at Srinagar’s Pratap Park here and chanted slogans in favour of the release of their colleague, Iqbal Ahmad Rather, a resident central Kashmr’s Budgam.

The protesting students demanded his immediate release, terming his detention as illegal.

Talking to reporters here, the protesting students said that their colleague was missing from the campus since September 12. “The police claimed that our colleague who is brother of seven sisters was arrested and tagged him as a militant and Over Ground Worker (OGW),” they said, adding that he was not involved in militant related issue.

“We know our colleague very well. The charges levelled against him are false and should be released at an earliest,” they demanded.

The protesting students said their colleague had went o Jammu to consult a doctor for his ailing father, even he according to the police has been arrested at the place where encounter has not taken place.

The students said that Iqbal who a student of MMI SSR has been tagged as a militant, which they said is not fear at all.

They said that they have no information about his whereabouts since September 12 and urged the Governor led administration and other officials to inform about his whereabouts at an earliest.

The protesting medico students also demanded his immediate release from the custody.

Earlier on September 13, police said that a truck in which militants were boarding was seized and driver and his helper were arrested.

The helper as per the reports was identified Ishfaq Ahmad who according to the students was their colleague.

“One AK-56, loaded magazines, one Chinese Pistol and other incriminating material was recovered from the site,” police added.
