Srinagar: As river Jhelum crossed the danger mark of 19-ft following incessant rains Ram Munshibagh, flood has been declared in central Kashmir. Flood was already declared in south Kashmir ater the Jhelum rose above 21 feet near Sangam in Anantnag district of south Kashmir.
According to an official of Irrigation and Flood Control Kashmir, the river Jhelum was crossed 19-ft mark near Rammunshi bagh at 12 a.m.
“The habitation residing along the embankments of River Jhelum / Nallahs and in low lying areas of central Kashmir are advised to remain vigilant,” Chief engineer Irrigation and Flood Control said. Besides the staff deputed on flood duty in Central Kashmir is directed to report to their respective sectors/beats, he added.
The river Jhelum was flowing at 20.64-ft at Ram Munshibagh at 7 a.m, the official said. The flood ‘is sounded in Central Kashmir when level crosses 16 ft and ‘flood’ is declared when it surges over 19 feet, the officials said.
The river Jhelum was flowing at 23.41-ft, more than two degrees above the danger mark of 21-ft at Sangam when flood is declared in south Kashmir.
At Asham in Bandipora district, the official said, the water level of Jhelum was 10.41-ft against 13-ft mark when flood alarm is sounded in north Kashmir. The flood is declared when the level at Asham crosses 14-ft mark.
Regarding some tributaries, the official said, the water level in Vishow Nallah at Khudwani was 7.72 m, Rambiyara Nallah (3.60) at Vachi and the nallah Lidder was 1.58 m at Batkoot and level was receding at all the three places.
Originating from Kousarnag in Aharbal, gushing waters of Vaishaw Nallah triggered the 2014 flood in Kashmir.
The gushing water of the nallah following heavy rains washed away many diversions in Kulgam district. These diversions were constructed following washing away of many bridges in 2014 flood.
