Srinagar: A Junior Commissioned Officer was among four persons killed as standoff between militants, who stormed an army camp at Sunjwan in heart of city, continued on Saturday.
Official sources said that the fidayeen entered from the backside of the camp and took shelter in one of the buildings.
Sources said that JCO, a non-commissioned officer (NCO) and two children were killed and four army men injured in the ongoing attack.
The JCO Madan Lal Choudhary and his daughter besides a Havaldar and a civilian were injured as militants opened fire and hurled grenades soon after storming inside the camp at around 5 am.
Sources said that this is for the second time in fifteen years that the camp has been attacked by the militants.
IGP SD Singh Jamwal told reporters in Jammu that suspicious movement was noticed by the sentry and his bunker was fired upon at around 5a.m. The fire was retaliated. “The number of militants isn’t known. They’ve been cornered in one of the family quarters,” he said.
Army and police have cordoned off the area around the Sunjwan Army camp. Soon after the attack, reinforcements of the Army’s special forces and SOG were rushed to the spot and cordoned off the whole area amid a fierce gunfight, officials said.
Meanwhile, district administration has ordered closure of all the schools within 500 meters from the camp
