Kashmir gets respite from cold; snow likely in upper reaches

Srinagar: After last decade’s coldest night of November in Srinagar, the night temperature across Kashmir valley improved by several degrees due to cloudy skies today.
An official of the Meteorological Department said that mercury, at most places in the Valley, settled above the freezing point, providing residents some relief from the intense cold.
Gulmarg and Pahalgam were the only places in the Valley which witnessed sub-zero temperature. Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 2.4 degrees Celsius, up nearly four degrees.
Pahalgam registered the minimum of minus 0.2 degree Celsius, up by over five degrees from the previous night’s minus 5.4 degrees Celsius while day temperature of the place settled at 13.8 degrees Celsius, two degrees above normal.

Srinagar recorded the minimum temperature of 1.3 degrees Celsius, up by over four degrees from previous night’s minus 3.1 degrees Celsius. On the previous night, the city had experienced the lowest night temperature during past 10 years in the month of November.
The night temperature in Srinagar last night remained above the freezing point for the first time after four days while day temperate settled at 14.6 degree Celsius, one degree above normal.
Qazigund in South Kashmir recorded a low of 0.2 degree Celsius while day temperate settled at 14.6 degree Celsius, one degree above normal.
Kokernag in South Kashmir recorded at low of 1.2 degree Celsius while day temperate settled at 13.9 degree Celsius, three degrees above normal.
Kupwara in North Kashmir recorded a low of 0.1 degree Celsius while day temperate was 13.6 degree Celsius.
The MeT office has forecast snowfall in the hills of Kashmir for next 24 hours which will give people respite from freezing temperatures.
In the meantime, a group of tourists while going back from Gulmarg today found themselves in a distressed situation, when their private Ford Endeavour got stuck near the Babarishi junction after skidding due to the snow on the road.
